Meet Emma

Emma, an energetic 11-year-old, has never let being an amputee hold her back. Born without a tibia in her right leg, she underwent her first surgery at just 9 months old and received her first prosthesis shortly after. By age 6, complications arose, leading to discomfort and mobility challenges. In 2021, she underwent an above-knee amputation, giving her a fresh start with a more comfortable prosthetic fit.

Emma has been a patient at A Step Ahead Prosthetics since she was just 3 years old. Over the years, she has grown into a determined and active young girl, always finding ways to move—hopping, climbing, and playing with her twin sister.

Who Says I can’t Foundation

At A Step Ahead Prosthetics, we believe that movement is for everyone—not just walking, but running, playing, and thriving. That’s why our partnership with The Who Says I Can’t Foundation is so important. Together, we ensure that kids like Emma aren’t limited by financial barriers.

Since Emma had been part of our patient family for years, our team—led by Bob Emerson, CP —knew she was the perfect candidate for a running blade. Through our partnership with The Who Says I Can’t Foundation, we were able to provide her with a custom-built sports prosthesis designed for high-energy movement.

Emma’s First Run

On the day of her fitting, Emma wasn’t nervous—she was ready. Most people take their first steps on a new prosthesis cautiously, using the parallel bars for stability. Not Emma. The moment she put on her running blade, she took off, experiencing the thrill of running for the first time in her life.

Her new running prosthesis, featuring a specialized blade foot and high-performance knee, is designed to maximize speed, energy return, and agility. Now, she can finally chase her sisters, fully participate in gym class, and explore new sports she never thought possible.

Looking Ahead!

Emma’s journey is just beginning. As she continues to grow, The Who Says I Can’t Foundation is committed to supporting her by ensuring she always has a properly fitting prosthesis.

We’re honored to be part of Emma’s story alongside our partners who help make these moments possible. Seeing Emma run for the first time was unforgettable—but it won’t be the last. We can’t wait to see what she accomplishes next!
